Future of Mobility – seamless mobility built on a shared neutral infrastructure

Sustainable, independent, compliant blockchains.

Initial situation

The mobility market is changing from individual vehicle ownership to flexible mobility services and infrastructure sharing. Instead of choosing the means of transport, the focus now lies on the journey itself. If you travel by train from Amsterdam to Hamburg on day 1, from Hamburg to Berlin by bus on day 2 and want to rent an e-scooter in Berlin on day 3 to explore the city, you usually need three accounts with three mobility companies today.

Mobility offers are still isolated solutions with little cooperation between providers. However, customers expect comprehensive full-service offers and a modern, comfortable user experience that individual mobility providers are not able to provide on their own. Traditional companies in the industry are facing increasing competition from IT-driven platforms such as Uber, which are breaking down traditional thinking patterns and quickly conquering new markets.

Several obstacles need to be cleared to make the way for new mobility. These are:

  • Instead of being offered a uniform user experience, travelers must use different services and accounts for respective transport services.
  • The same applies to providers: They must verify and validate the identity of each user.
  • Due to a lack of possibilities for the automated distribution of revenues, only a few and often locally limited offers that combine the services of different mobility providers are currently available to the end customer.
  • Many mobility providers often still work manually or even paper-based, which makes it difficult to cooperate with different providers in favor of the user experience and hinders the process automation.
  • Private sharing of vehicles has so far hardly been used due to cumbersome handling and security concerns.

The goal

A basis for a mobility concept across providers is needed, where users can book suitable mobility offers from different providers and directly offer their services – without having to rely on central platform operators. All parties benefit from 100% reliable transactions in real-time and retain full data sovereignty. All information should be shared securely, on-demand and in a trustworthy manner.

The solution

With the Business Blockchain evan.network (powered by EPN), mobility providers can share their resources and make them available to their customers as comprehensive offers. Manual work steps and paper-based processes shall be replaced by digital contracts, enabling transactions between mobility providers to be digital, efficient and trustworthy. Each provider equips its vehicles or other means of transportation with Digital Identities that enable the seamless integration of individual vehicles into third-party offers. Providers thus create a comprehensive mobility offering with holistic user experience.

Use at a glance

  • Vehicles are made available as Digital Identities and become part of digital processes. Besides, thanks to their unique identifiability, vehicles are documented in a consistent, trustworthy and tamper-proof manner
  • Combinability of mobility offerings via technological standards: Customers find the optimal combination of various offers of their preferred mobility provider according to their current needs
  • Increase the utilization of transport means and attract new users through seamless integration into various mobility offerings

  • Individual mobility providers preserve their independence and customer loyalty, as transactions take place directly between providers. Data can be shared securely, on-demand and 100% reliably
  • Simple sharing through efficient processes thanks to digital contracts: Media breaks are eliminated and manual work steps in the rental are reduced, for both private or commercial providers

Best practice: with the Mobility Blockchain
Platform to multimodal mobility

With the Mobility Blockchain Platform, Daimler Mobility AG (former Daimler Financial Services) and four other companies are working on improving the user experience, preserving the data sovereignty and creating decentralized cooperation in urban mobility.

Mobility providers can make their vehicles digitally available and, based on common standards, integrate them into a wide variety of offerings without having to rely on central platforms. The Mobility Blockchain Platform enables travelers to use a variety of mobility services with a single user identity from their preferred mobility provider. The entire platform is oriented towards the core concept of decentralization, openness, and neutrality, which is guaranteed in particular by the use of the business blockchain evan.network (powered by EPN) as its technological basis.

In the first months of the cooperation, a first concrete use case was realized: the car rental with just one click. Users can identify themselves and rent vehicles with just one click. The payment takes place automatically after the service usage is completed. In the future, further areas such as the use of parking areas, public transport, insurance or the e-vehicles loading will be gradually mapped in the Mobility Blockchain Platform.
